I think a better comparison is HTTPS versus HTTP.
Sites go through the bother (and expense) to get certificates because there
is a general knowledge about "secure" sites.
The same thing seems to be ignored in email.
Even in applications with built in PGP support (PMMail), you have to jump
through hoops to use it on a regular basis (no way to automaticly use it for
new messages or even when replying to an encrypted message).
